FEBRUARY 22ND – INTERMEDIATE HIKE – JACK LONDON STATE HISTORIC PARK – This moderate hike will be about 5 miles with some climbing. We will hike to London lake, the Ancient Redwood and the Historic Orchard. We will snack/lunch at picnic tables overlooking the vineyards. Parking is $10 per car or bring your pass. Rain cancels. MARCH 1 – LONG HIKE – JACK LONDON STATE PARK – This lovely meander through Jack London State Park will take us through the familiar redwood trails around London Lake, give us a little serious exercise as we hike our way up to the 2370’ Park Summit, then an easy second half through the historic orchard and Camp Via. Estimated distance is less than ten miles, elevation gain about 1700’. Bring poles, water, lunch. Leave Berger at 8:30 am. Hike Leader is Jeanne Osterland, 978-4212.
MARCH 1ST – SHORT HIKE – HEALDSBURG RIDGE OPEN SPACE PRESERVE – This hike is considered easy to moderate three miles with a couple of relatively steep spots. Trail through the wetlands of Fox Pond, oak woodlands, and chaparral offers views of Fitch Mountain, the Russian River, and the Mayacamas Mountains. Leave Berger at 9:00. MARCH 8th –INTERMEDIATE HIKE – RESCHEDULED FROM JANUARY – MCDONALD HISTORIC DISTRICT AND CEMETERY-Explore Santa Rosa history with an easy, mostly level 3-4 mile stroll. We will start in the historic neighborhood and follow the funeral procession route of yesteryear along McDonald Ave before entering the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery at Franklin Ave. Notables buried here include our city’s forefathers, members of prominent families, military veterans and immigrants who helped shape the city of Santa Rosa. Leave the Berger Center at 9:00. Heavy rain cancels, in case of light rain, hiking poles suggested for cemetery walk. Hike leader is Marilyn Pahr. 541-6430.
MARCH 15TH – INTERMEDIATE HIKE – ARMSTRONG WOODS S.P. – Hike through the park’s stately and magnificent redwoods along the East Ridge – Pool Ridge loop, returning along the nature trail for views of the grandest trees. This is a strenuous loop hike of about 5.5 miles with an estimated elevation gain of 1000 feet. Leave Berger at 9.00am. Bring lunch, poles and water. Hike Leader Florentia Scott 591-1929.
MARCH 15TH – LONG HIKE – WILLOW CREEK TO SHELL BEACH – This is a 9-mile through hike with about 2,000’ of elevation gain. From the Willow Creek addition to Sonoma Coast State Park, near Duncans Mills, we will climb to the Islands in the Sky Trail, then descend to the Pomo Canyon campground via the Lower Old Barn Trail. A second ascent will take us through two redwood groves to the summit of Red Hill, with spectacular views (weather permitting) of the Russian River and the Sonoma Coast. The hike will terminate at Shell Beach, where a car shuttle will return us to Willow Creek. Bring poles, lunch and water. Hike leader is Maurice Fliess, 536-9382. Leave Berger at 8:30 a.m.
A REMINDER TO ALL HIKERS: If the hiking trail is more than 30 miles round trip from Oakmont, it is customary to compensate your driver at least $5.00 for gas.
